Remaining Positive When Things Don’t Go as Planned

Remaining Positive When Things Don’t Go as Planned

It's hard to stay positive when things don't go as planned. Change is a constant in life, and it's impossible to predict everything. Knowing and accepting that change is inevitable can help make the unpredictable more predictable. When we start to think of change more in terms of this transition or shift, it becomes easier to bear. People often feel like change is something that happens to them, but a transition is an action that you take on personally; it is a shift in your actions and/or your way of thinking. When you notice change starting to happen it is a sign that you need to make this shift. It is a sign that you need to move forward or let go of someone, or a business transaction like a possible property. Especially when you know for sure it will not be wise to move forward. Remember, it is not about “IF” it’s about “WHEN.”

Let’s talk about the real facts of failure. First, you must know that everybody fails. EVERYBODY! Just like when babies learn to walk. They don’t just get up and start running. We try and try, stumble, and fall until we learn to balance and then we are off! It’s all about trial and error, that is what life is all about! To succeed in most things, failure is often involved. Problem: Failure is a part of life, but it's not talked about enough. People are embarrassed to admit they've failed and don't want to listen to others who have failed. It's hard enough to be successful without having to worry about failing, but the truth is that failure is an inevitable part of the journey. Show me a successful entrepreneur who’s never failed, and I’ll show you a liar. No one is above failing. It’s all about how you perceive it. When something does not work out the way you want it to, look at it as a lesson learned and it will be better next time. Remember, failure is temporary.

Why is it so important to have good thoughts? How can being positive help? I mean, not everything everyday goes our way, right? It’s natural or normal to express the woes in our day to other people to get it off our chest…. right? It is perfectly normal to unload and talk about what might be bothering you, however, it is not healthy to stay in that frame of mind. Especially if you already have negative sub-conscious self-talk. Your thoughts affect your actions. Your actions, in turn, translate into whether you succeed in your career, relationships…life. Do you see how important it is to make sure your self-talk is empowering and positive? Either way you look at it, if you have negative thoughts, you will have negative results. If you have positive thoughts, you guessed it…. positive results. So, what is positive thinking and how do we start to change the programmed self-talk and outlook we must be better?

What is positive thinking?

The practice of focusing on the good in any given situation. That doesn’t mean you ignore reality or make light of any problem. You have a belief there will be a good outcome. Anticipating happiness, health, and success instead of expecting the worst. This doesn’t mean sitting around all day telling yourself to be happy. You must put it in motion in your everyday life. This not only makes your mind healthier, but your body and spirit too! Here are few physical benefits that result from positive thinking…

  • Lower Blood pressure
  • Lower chance of having a heart attack
  • Better stress management
  • Better mood
  • Clearer thinking
  • More creativity
  • Less depression

So how do we push forward with our plans and not give up? How do we move forward and know that it is ok to adjust? Again, it is all about how you think. Realizing you learn more when you fail is key! Be innovative. Not every plan works. This should spark you to produce more ideas and create. If one idea doesn’t work, then it’s on to the next one. Often, using what we’d learned from the idea that failed, makes the next iteration better and more successful.

Be realistic. As much as you want everything to work out with your business deal, partnership, or whatever you are working on, it doesn't. Decide to be honest about that fact. So rather than smile and say, “I can make this work” no matter what the reality is, decide to be real about everything.

Don't take things personally. Life is short, and time is precious. Business is not personal, and you need to have your mind at the highest level of capacity to create, not worried about what could have been.

Here are some ways you can start training your mind to think more positively and give strength to your motivation for what you want to accomplish.

  • Empower Yourself! Start finding what you like/love about yourself. Focus on those.
  • Practice Gratitude. Consider keeping a gratitude journal where you can regularly write about the things in life that you are grateful for.
  • Humor Sometimes, simply recognizing the potential humor in a situation can lessen your stress and brighten your outlook. It’s great to laugh at yourself occasionally!
  • Study your habits and form new ones. Stop the spiral of doubt by blocking it with positive thoughts. If you’re able to cut off a negative thought pattern before it gets out of hand, you can shift to recalling positive affirmations instead. By training your mind to block negative thoughts with positive thinking, you’re steadily training yourself to stop thinking in a negative way.
  • Disengage from negativity. Sometimes too much social media or even the news can affect our psychological health. Distressing news and social comparison all affect your capability to think positively, as well as your self-esteem.
  • Imagine your best possible self-everyday Direct your thoughts, feelings, and behavior in a more positive way. Keep in mind that the language you use to yourself can affect your disposition. By consciously changing the way you talk to yourself, you can begin to think more positively and see yourself in a new light.
  • Be in the company of positive thinking people. Surrounding yourself with optimistic people will help you have a positive mindset. Do your best to practice these exercises every day. Eventually it will get easier and become more of a positive thinker.

By doing these exercises and forming your thoughts to a higher frequency you are developing a win-win perspective. When you are working on your business keep these strategies in mind and make sure to include these main points to keep a win-win perspective.

  • Positive working relationships.
  • Future business opportunities.
  • Discover new options
  • Managing your expectations
  • Separate the people from the problem
  • Invent options for mutual gain

With all of this in mind, be driven and ready to take on what comes your way to get the results you need. Know that to have success there will be failure involved. And that’s ok!
