Mindset Building Exercises

Mindset is an all-encompassing word that describes your views, opinions, ideas, and motivations. It describes the way you see challenges or difficulties and how you might tackle problems. Mindset can set the tone for the day and determine whether it’s a good or bad one.

Mindset can also be the make-it-or-break-it factor for many business owners or entrepreneurs. Anyone who wants to strike out on their own will take risk and face challenges. The right mindset is integral to success, no matter what your vision or goals are.

One way to get the right mindset is through mindset building exercises. Just as it becomes easier to lift weights after following a consistent training schedule, so too will it become easier to have a positive and resilient mindset when you put in the exercise to develop it.

Why the Right Mindset Matters

We’ve all heard the expression, “mind over matter,” right? That common phrase exists because of the inherent power of our minds. The mind, when applied correctly, is a stronger force than even our physical bodies.

The right mindset matters in life, but also in business and entrepreneurship. Consider the following reasons as to why the right mindset matters:

  • A resilient mindset will help you get through potential problems and issues.
  • A positive mindset will motivate you to dream big and be excited for what’s to come.
  • A growth mindset will encourage you to continue to learn and gain knowledge or expertise in your chosen field.

These are just a few of the many other healthy mindsets that a business owner or entrepreneur should develop. We can also look at it from the other side: negative mindsets (e.g., pessimistic, defeated, lazy) will hold you back from achieving certain goals. Intuition tells us that the right mindset matters because our minds matter—they are strong and powerful motivators, so we need to tap into it in the right way.

Things to Consider When Creating a Plan

To develop the right mindset, it can be helpful to create a plan for mindset building exercises. Unlike physical exercise, it’s not so obvious what you can do to exercise the mind. Consider the following tips when you are creating a plan for mindset building:

  • How much time do you have to devote to this? It’s important to prioritize time in your schedule to mindset building. It’s impossible to “multi-task” while practicing mindset building because you need to be 100% focused on it. Put away the distractions and prioritize time to do this.
  • Is there something specific you are focusing on or is it just general? For example, are you working on building an overall positive mindset, or is there a specific situation such as a relationship that needs to be worked on?
  • Do you resonate with any religious, spiritual or mindfulness practice? There can be significant overlap between these areas and may help guide you.

Types of Mindset Building Exercises

If you are doing the “work out” of mindset building, what are your specific exercises? They will look different for each person, but here are a few examples to consider:

  • Self-exploration and self-reflection. Introspection is the first step, so taking some time to think and reflect, perhaps through journaling, can help you become more aware of your thoughts, feelings, and current mindsets.
  • Look for learning opportunities. Actively seek out situations that make you uncomfortable to put you in a place where you can grow.
  • Learn about neuroplasticity. This is the scientific study of the human brain that says we can actually adapt to different environments and experiences. Our brains are not static—they can change!
  • Stick to it for 21 days to for a habit. While there is actually no consensus on how long it takes to form a habit, many agree that at least 21 days is necessary.

Mindset is the starting place for success. Business owners, entrepreneurs and investors need to devote time to mindset building exercises to be more resilient, positive, and growth-oriented.
