Benefits to Positive Thinking

Why is it so important to have good thoughts? Not everything, everyday goes our way, right? It is natural to want to express the woes of our day to other people, to get it off our chest? It is perfectly normal to unload and talk about what might be bothering you, however, it is not healthy to stay in that frame of mind. Especially if you already have negative sub-conscious self-talk.

Your thoughts affect your actions. Your actions, in turn, translate in your career, relationships…life. It is important to make sure your self-talk is empowering and positive. Either way you look at it, more than likely, if you have negative thoughts, you will have negative results. If you have positive thoughts, you guessed it…. positive results. What is positive thinking?

The practice of focusing on the good in any given situation. That doesn’t mean you ignore reality or make light of any problem. You have a belief there will be a good outcome. Anticipating happiness, health, and success instead of expecting the worst. This doesn’t mean sitting around all day telling yourself to be happy. You must put it in motion in your everyday life. This not only makes your mind healthier, but your body and spirit too! Here are a few benefits that can come from positive thinking…

  • Better Stress Management
  • Better Mood
  • Clearer thinking
  • Creativity
  • Positive Perspective
  • Happy and Relaxed

It’s probably not a surprise that people exposed to illness, diseases, even the common cold, the optimistic outlook of people tend to recover faster and probably show less symptoms than the ones with a negative outlook. Before we jump into how to start thinking positively, let’s understand what some negative thoughts are. Being aware of these is a major win to shifting your mindset.

  • Always expecting the worst
  • Bad things always happen
  • It’s too good to be true
  • Opportunities are limited
  • There is always something going on, never time for a break
  • Not good enough
  • Can’t do it
  • Not smart enough

When you notice these negative thoughts, try to stop and shift the thought to a positive. Your negative thoughts won’t go away overnight. But with practice and being mindful, a little every day you will see a change soon enough.

So how do we shift these thoughts? Here are a few things that help you get started.

Humor: Sometimes, simply recognizing the potential humor in a situation can lessen your stress and brighten your outlook. It’s great to laugh at yourself every once in a while! Laughter is an easy way for your mind and body to destress and relax. This is a must do on your list!

Empower Yourself: Start finding what you like/love about yourself. Focus on those and highlight how that makes you feel.

Practice Gratitude: Consider keeping a gratitude journal, where you can regularly write about the things in life that you are grateful for.

Study your habits and form new ones. Stop the spiral of doubt by blocking it with positive thoughts. If you’re able to cut off a negative thought pattern, you can shift to recalling positive affirmations instead.

Disengage from negative information. Sometimes when we spend extra time on social media or the news, and that content can also affect our psychological health. Limit your time and focus on positive content or learn something new with that time. Allowing yourself time to take in positive information can be uplifting.

Imagine your best possible self-every day. Direct your thoughts, feelings, and behavior in a positive way. Keep in mind that the language you use to yourself can affect your disposition. By consciously changing the way you talk to yourself, you can begin to think more positively and see yourself in a new light. Thoughts and words are powerful, choose them wisely.

Be in the company of positive thinking people. Surrounding yourself with optimistic people will help you have a positive mindset. Spending time with friends and family can help your foundation of thoughts as those people in your life offer balance.

Practice these simple actions every day and you’ll be on your way to a positive outlook and future.
